Age, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can all leave you with some extra flab around your abdomen. Unfortunately, while diet and exercise can help you to reduce excess fat, there is not a whole lot that can be done in the gym or kitchen to tighten loose skin and flatten your belly. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Renee Burke performs abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck, at her Barrington, IL practice to help women and men regain their firm contours and taut skin.
“I am 60+, and very fit — I work out every day, both cardio and strength training. However, I was very bothered by loose skin and a “pouch” under my belly button area that would not go away, no matter how much I exercised. I was referred to Dr. Renee Burke, in Barrington, Illinois for a mini tummy tuck. The procedure was done on May 5th, 2016, and I am now 6 days post op. I HAVE THE TUMMY OF A TEENAGER! My experience with Dr. Burke and her staff was absolutely wonderful, to say the least! They are warm, caring and VERY professional! I was quite nervous prior to the procedure, but everyone in the office calmed my nerves and made the entire experience absolutely effortless. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Renee Burke to anyone considering a tummy tuck or any other body makeover. Thank you Dr. Burke and staff for a FANTASTIC experience!” – RealSelf Review

If you struggle with excess abdominal tissue, particularly after pregnancy or significant weight changes, you may benefit from abdominoplasty like our patients from Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, and other nearby communities. The sagging skin and loose tissue around your belly won’t go away on its own. This is because the skin has lost elasticity and the abdominal wall may have become outstretched. No matter how hard you work out or how healthy you eat, these are problems that cannot be 100 percent reversed on their own.
The tummy tuck is designed to address these problems and provide you with a flatter, well-toned abdomen. Although it is not intended to address excess fat, Dr. Burke can combine your tummy tuck with liposuction of the abdomen and hips to help further slim down your waistline.
During your consultation with Dr. Burke, she will determine whether you are best suited for a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. This will depend on the location and severity of excess skin on your abdomen. She may also recommend supplementing your tummy tuck with liposuction. In fact, there are some patients who come in asking about a tummy tuck but are actually better suited for liposuction, and vice versa.
When performing abdominoplasty, Dr. Burke may remove excess skin that overhangs or is stretched. Fat located in the abdominal area that is resistant to dieting and exercise may require liposuction. Your tummy tuck with Dr. Burke will also consist of tightening loose abdominal muscles that generally have weakened as the result of pregnancy or aging. The goals of a tummy tuck are a smooth, toned abdomen and a well-defined waistline.
“I love my new appearance! Clothes fit again and my look is natural.
The recovery was what you would expect in terms of fatigue for a few weeks but totally worth it. I wish I had done it sooner. No regrets!” – Read the Full Review on RealSelf

To sculpt a defined waistline, Dr. Burke may also address any excess fat on the hips and love handles by performing liposuction at the time of your tummy tuck. Incisions for a tummy tuck are concealed within the bikini line and around the belly button.
A mini tummy tuck treats a limited, central tummy bulge as well as excess skin below the belly button. A short incision made just above the pubic region is generally all that is required—an incision around the belly button is usually not necessary.
Recovery depends on the extent of your tummy tuck. Most patients are able to stand upright within the first week and can perform lighter activities after two. It will take some time to get back to normal, so plan on taking a few weeks off work and other daily activities. Your body will need some time to heal; any bruising and swelling will continue to fade over time. While scarring cannot be avoided, it typically lightens over time and can be easily hidden under a bikini or a pair of underwear. Most patients don’t mind the scar since it means losing the excess skin!
Once your body has completely healed, you will notice dramatically slimmer contours and firmer, younger looking skin. For many of our patients, the procedure is worth every minute when they see their new bodies in the mirror for the first time.
