5 Myths About Lip Fillers

A woman is happy with the feel of her lips after getting lip fillers.

Lip augmentation with fillers is one of the most popular nonsurgical treatments in the U.S., and it’s easy to see why. Fillers restore volume to reverse age-related volume loss and enhance naturally thin lips. Some patients, however, may be reluctant to get lip fillers at our med spa in Barrington, IL, because of some persistent myths.

We’ll debunk those myths in this blog post and explain how lip fillers can be the subtle change that makes a significant difference in your appearance.

Lip Filler Myths

Before we get to debunking the myths, it’s helpful to know a little bit about dermal fillers. It used to be that a single filler was used to add volume to multiple areas of the face, including the lips. But the companies that make fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® now offer specialized products designed for specific purposes. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® and Restylane Silk are both formulated to augment lips and minimize fine lines around the mouth.

Now, about those myths:

Getting fillers stretches the lips: Patients worry that fillers will stretch their lips and cause them to sag as the fillers dissipate. That doesn’t happen because VOLBELLA and Silk are both made using hyaluronic acid—a substance that occurs naturally in the body—which hydrates and stimulates collagen production. Leftover hyaluronic acid can thicken the skin’s outer layer.

You can have lip filler injected the day before a big event: Even though fillers produce immediate results, there is always a chance of swelling and bruising after injectable treatments. I recommend scheduling your appointment when you don’t have any social events planned for a few days.

It’s easy to match the look of a specific celebrity: Cosmetic treatments such as lip fillers are meant to enhance the patient’s own natural attractiveness rather than make them look like someone else. “Wish pictures” that some patients bring with them to lip augmentation appointments can be helpful, but lip fillers won’t necessarily make them look like a specific celebrity.

Lip fillers always look unnatural: If you look at celebrity Instagram accounts, it is easy to find photos of women with balloon-like lips. The reality, however, is that some of your friends or family have had lip fillers, and you don’t think twice because their lips look naturally full. Most patients who want lip fillers at our Barrington med spa want lips subtly enhanced, so they appear more sensuous without drawing unwanted attention.

Any filler is appropriate for lip augmentation: Some injectors believe one type of filler is better for lips than another, but certain fillers should never be used for lip enhancement. Choosing a skilled, experienced injector is the most important choice you make when it comes to getting the results you want.
