At the Med Spa at Renee Burke, MD, in Barrington, IL, we use BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN® to give people from Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and nearby cities a more youthful, relaxed appearance that looks very natural. These injectable products soften lines that develop around the eyes and on the forehead. Some of the most common treatment areas include crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes and the vertical worry lines between the eyes that are sometimes called “11s.”

Good BOTOX Candidates

Anyone concerned about looking older than they actually are because of wrinkles and frown lines can usually benefit from injectable treatments such as BOTOX and dermal fillers. These treatments work best for patients whose skin retains much of its elasticity and who aren’t ready for aesthetic surgery. We’re also seeing patients in their mid to late 20s who get BOTOX injections as a way to postpone the development of wrinkles by limiting the movement of specific facial muscles.

What is BOTOX (And Other Neuromodulators)?

Neuromodulators like BOTOX and Dysport contain a purified protein that is naturally produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium. BOTOX was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in 2002; newer alternatives such as Dysport are all FDA approved as well.

How BOTOX Works

Wrinkles targeted by BOTOX develop over the course of your lifetime as you frown or squint throughout the day. When injected into specific areas of facial muscles, BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN temporarily stop the muscles from contracting, allowing lines and creases in the skin to smooth out. These injections can also postpone the development of dynamic wrinkles by subtly limiting facial movements.

Other BOTOX Uses

BOTOX is approved by the FDA for a range of other treatments in addition to wrinkle reduction. At the Med Spa at Renee Burke, MD, our aesthetic team uses it to treat excess underarm sweating (a condition called hyperhidrosis). Men and women suffering from this condition can feel embarrassed in social and professional situations and have to change clothes often. A series of BOTOX injections into the area of the underarms temporarily prevents the sweat glands from working.

Choosing Between BOTOX, Dysport, & Xeomin

BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and XEOMIN all use the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. They all work in a similar way and last about the same length of time. There are some minor differences between these products, including:

  • Dysport has a thinner consistency that makes it well suited to treating larger areas of the face.
  • XEOMIN, unlike the other products, does not contain any additives.

In addition to selecting a product, it’s also very important to select a highly trained professional to provide your treatment. All injectors have their own preferred uses for BOTOX, XEOMIN, and Dysport. During your consultation with Dr. Burke, she will review your options, and she will help guide you to the choice that’s right for you.

Your Procedure

BOTOX patients meet with our nurse practitioner on the day of their treatments to discuss their specific cosmetic concerns. Once the extent of the treatment needed is determined, Dr. Burke carefully injects BOTOX using a fine needle that produces minimal discomfort and bruising. Once she completes the injections, we provide patients with ice packs to help reduce swelling. The whole process usually takes about 15 minutes.

Because there’s no downtime after BOTOX injections, patients can schedule appointments on their lunch breaks without worrying about co-workers or friends knowing.

What To Avoid After Treatment

While BOTOX injections require no recovery time, for best results avoid lying down for the first 4 hours and hold off on the following until the next day:

  • Rubbing or massaging the treatment areas
  • Strenuous activity
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages

How Long Does It Take To See Results From BOTOX?

Your experience following BOTOX injections may differ from that of someone else you know who got BOTOX. Some patients begin noticing changes after 2 to 3 days and see the full results after about a week. For others, it may take a few days more for the treatment to have an effect.

How Long Does BOTOX Last?

Results typically last 3 to 4 months before wrinkles gradually re-emerge. You can maintain the results with periodic BOTOX injections.

Are There Any Side Effects?

BOTOX and other neuromodulator treatments are relatively safe when performed by a trained, experienced practitioner. Side effects are temporary and commonly include swelling, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site; headache; and nausea.

BOTOX FAQs

Is BOTOX safe?

Yes, BOTOX has been FDA approved for therapeutic use since 1989. In 2002, the FDA approved BOTOX for aesthetic use as well, such as in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead. As with any treatment, however, it’s important to talk with your doctor about any existing health conditions you have that may not be indicated for BOTOX treatment.

Is there a way to make my results last longer?

Although you can expect your BOTOX results to last 3 to 4 months, some people who use BOTOX over the long term may find that they need fewer touch-up treatments over the course of a year.

Are there alternative uses for BOTOX?

In addition to smoothing crow’s feet, frown lines, and other dynamic facial wrinkles, BOTOX is also used to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile. In a procedure called a lip flip, BOTOX relaxes the muscles that pull up on the upper lip and cause too much of the upper gumline to show. BOTOX is also useful for addressing migraine headaches, excessive sweating, eye muscle disorders, and other conditions.

Can BOTOX be combined with other procedures?

We often use BOTOX along with dermal fillers to address multiple signs of facial aging. Many people call this a liquid facelift because it smooths out fine lines and wrinkles and restores lost facial volume in the cheeks, lips, or under the eyes, creating a more youthful appearance overall.
