Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can make your body look out of proportion, and additionally can have physical consequences, placing unnecessary stress on your neck, shoulders, and back. If you are uncomfortable or self-conscious with your naturally large breast size, Dr. Burke may recommend a Breast Reduction, also known as Reduction Mammaplasty. Breast reduction surgically reduces breast volume and reshapes the size of your breasts to bring better proportion to your body and improve body image.

Determining Your Eligibility

Most prospective breast reduction patients have questions about their eligibility for the procedure and the insurance approval process. Typically, insurance companies require a certain amount of breast tissue to be removed. They determine the necessary amount using the Schnur Sliding Scale, a reference table that matches body surface area to an average amount of breast tissue that’s removed during breast reduction. Insurance companies usually require at least the amount of breast tissue listed on the Schnur Scale be removed during surgery before agreeing to cover the procedure. This ensures that patients are approved based on medical necessity, rather than aesthetics.

For example, if your body surface area is 2.55, your insurance company will likely require that your surgeon agree to remove at least 1662 grams of tissue—the amount listed on the scale. If you’re not sure what your body surface area is, you can use the calculator here.

What to Expect From Your Breast Reduction Surgery

Using the most current techniques, Dr. Burke will make small incisions around the nipple and areola, as well as a vertical incision from the areola to the breast crease. An additional small incision, hidden in the breast crease, may also be necessary. The small, resulting scars from the procedure will be inconspicuous.

A breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and may be an outpatient procedure or, in some cases, an overnight stay may be recommended.
