Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Model

Patients at our Barrington, IL, med spa can benefit from platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a serum containing nourishing components of your own blood. It’s similar to the PRP therapy used by injured athletes to promote faster healing, but at our med spa we use it as a natural, minimally invasive way to smooth wrinkles and scars.

Why PRP Works

The growth factors contained in platelets help rejuvenate our body’s cells. Athletes undergo PRP therapy to heal more quickly following an injury. When we use the treatment for cosmetic reasons, the platelet-rich plasma triggers the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

What to Expect

The aesthetic specialist performing the treatment first draws a small blood sample and then processes it using a centrifuge to create a serum that’s rich with platelets. We typically combine PRP therapy with microneedling or AquaGold® treatments, first applying the serum to the treatment area. The microneedling treatment creates access for platelets to penetrate the skin. Additional serum may be applied after microneedling, as well. Because the treatment is minimally invasive, there’s very little downtime following the procedure. Depending on the desired outcome, we may recommend scheduling additional treatments every few weeks until your goals are met.

Good PRP Candidates

People who want to add volume to their skin, reduce fine lines, or improve their skin’s texture, but who also want to avoid plastic surgery, are ideal candidates for PRP therapy. Although the results aren’t as permanent as a surgical procedure, you can still expect to see an improved appearance for about 18 months. Patients typically get a series of treatments at regular intervals to get optimal benefits from PRP therapy.
