Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the country, with hundreds of thousands of women benefiting from breast implants each year. Dr. Burke customizes breast augmentation procedures based on the unique goals of her patients. Your options involve the implants’ type, size, and profile, in addition to incision location and placement. This enables a mother to restore lost breast volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding; a breast cancer survivor to take back her feminine figure after a mastectomy; or a woman who has always had smaller breasts to achieve the fuller, curvier figure she has always wanted.

“For years I dealt with being flat chested. I was never able to hold up a dress without having a super padded bra, and now with the help of Dr. Burke, I am able to hold up a dress. Just in time to start trying on wedding dresses.”

Breast Implant Options

Dr. Burke proudly offers women a wide selection of breast implants from Allergan® and Sientra®. These FDA-approved implants allow patients to achieve their own unique outcomes with a personalized combination of size, fill material, shape, and profile.

How Do You Choose Breast Implant Size?

This is one of the main decisions breast augmentation patients ask about. Dr. Burke considers various factors when recommending breast implant size, including your anatomy, amount of existing breast tissue, desired breast size, and lifestyle. When implants are over 450 cc, she recommends placement of a surgical mesh such as GalaFLEX® during the surgery to support the breasts like an internal bra.

Should I Choose Silicone or Saline Breast Implants?

Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Today, most patients over age 22 choose silicone implants because they make the breasts look and feel more natural than saline implants. Silicone implants are pre-filled and are available in different firmnesses ranging from silicone gel to highly cohesive silicone (gummy bears). Saline implants are filled with harmless sterile saltwater after they are placed within the breast and are more affordable than silicone.

Dr. Burke will work closely with you to help choose the right breast implant size and fill material for you.

The following implants are popular with Dr. Burke’s patients:

  • Natrelle® INSPIRA and Classic implants filled with silicone gel
  • Natrelle® saline implants
  • High-strength cohesive gel “gummy bear” implants filled with cohesive silicone gel

Breast Implant Profiles

In general, patients can choose low, moderate, and high-profile implants, each offering a different level of projection from the chest wall.

  • Low-profile implants are generally wider and have less projection, making them a suitable choice for individuals with a broader chest frame.
  • Moderate-profile implants offer a balanced look and are often recommended for those seeking a more natural appearance.
  • High-profile implants are narrower but provide greater projection, making them ideal for those looking to achieve a fuller, more dramatic result.

Breast Implant Placement

Patients have 2 implant placement options: submuscular and subglandular.

  • Submuscular placement involves inserting the implant beneath the pectoral muscle, which can offer a more natural look and feel while potentially minimizing the risk of capsular contracture.
  • Subglandular placement positions the implant above the muscle but below the breast tissue. This option usually involves a quicker recovery period and can provide a fuller look, but it may come with a higher likelihood of visible implant rippling.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Dr. Burke uses today’s most current techniques in breast augmentation to ensure beautiful and natural-looking results. She offers traditional incision locations hidden under the breast or the edge of the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). Additionally, Dr. Burke specializes in transaxillary breast augmentation, where the incision is concealed within a natural crease of the underarm region, avoiding any visible scars on the breast.

Your surgery with Dr. Burke will be performed under general anesthesia. Once your specified incision has been made, Dr. Burke will carefully place your chosen implants within a pocket created either above or beneath the pectoral muscle. Silicone implants are put in place pre-filled to your desired size.

What Is the No-Touch Technique?

For a quicker and more efficient procedure, Dr. Burke uses the Keller Funnel™. The Keller Funnel is an implant delivery device that allows no-touch insertion of the implants into the breast. Once Dr. Burke has achieved your desired results, your incisions are closed, and any necessary dressings or surgical drains are put into place.

Can Breast Augmentation Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes! Dr. Burke can safely perform breast augmentation along with other plastic surgery procedures to provide multiple improvements with a single surgery and recovery period. These combination procedures, called mommy makeovers, often include one or more of the following procedures:

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift Surgery

Breast augmentation adds fullness to the breasts while a breast lift raises and reshapes them. Mild sagging can be corrected with implants. Moderate to significant sagging requires a lift to reduce the amount of excess stretched skin and restore a youthful breast shape and position. Dr. Burke often combines these procedures for women after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight loss.

Breast Augmentation Recovery and Results

Most women return home shortly after their surgery under the care of a loved one. Dr. Burke generally recommends returning to light activities within a day or two of your augmentation and full activities within 2 to 3 weeks.

You will notice fuller, younger-looking breasts almost immediately, with results improving as bruising, swelling, and incision lines continue to diminish as you heal. We love hearing the stories of our patients who have undergone breast augmentation: how they spent hours at the mall trying on clothes for their new body, their first time wearing a bikini, or the simple joy they felt when first seeing the full outcome of their procedure in the mirror.

Results are long-term and can be enjoyed for many years. However, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and natural aging may alter the shape of your breasts after augmentation.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Is breast augmentation surgery safe?

When performed by an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon, breast augmentation is quite safe. While complications are possible with any surgery, Dr. Burke uses only FDA-approved implants and takes special care to ensure each patient is a good candidate for the surgery.

Can I still breastfeed after getting breast implants?

It is perfectly safe to breastfeed after having breast augmentation. If this is your plan, Dr. Burke can take special steps when performing your surgery to avoid impacting your milk glands and associated nerves.

Will my implants need to be replaced?

As long as you are happy with the way your breasts look and feel, there’s no set time frame in which they should be replaced. Dr. Burke performs breast augmentation revision to address concerns and complications. She can also perform an elective implant exchange for patients who want to change the size of their implants or upgrade to a newer type.

Is breast augmentation worth it?

There’s a reason breast augmentation is consistently one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. and at our practice. The vast majority of patients are happy with their results and more confident about the way they look in and out of clothing.

How can I pay for breast implants?

While health insurance does not cover the cost of your breast implants, we offer CareCredit® and other flexible financing options to help you pay for your procedure and achieve your “dream look” with as little stress as possible.

Are silicone breast implants better than saline?

Many women prefer silicone implants for their natural look and feel. However, implant selection is always a matter of personal preference. During your consultation, Dr. Burke will help you explore your options and choose the breast implants that best align with your needs and goals.
