At her Barrington, IL, practice, Dr. Renee Burke specializes in breast augmentation to help women from Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and other nearby cities feel more feminine, proportional, and confident. As a female board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Burke knows what a woman’s breasts can mean for her self-esteem and the way she carries herself.
The size and shape of your breasts are influenced by a number of different factors, from genetics to pregnancy to changes in your weight. Whether your breasts have endured changes throughout life, or they were never really the breasts you wanted, an augmentation can increase fullness and create more youthful, feminine contours. Dr. Burke’s goals for your breast augmentation are to create or restore balance and volume to help you attain your ideal breast shape and size.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the country, with hundreds of thousands of women benefiting from breast implants each year. Dr. Burke customizes breast augmentation procedures based on the unique goals of her patients. Your options involve the implants’ type, size, and profile, in addition to incision location and placement. This enables a mother to restore lost breast volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding; a breast cancer survivor to take back her feminine figure after a mastectomy; or a woman who has always had smaller breasts to achieve the fuller, curvier figure she has always wanted.
Dr. Burke creates exceptional results by combining the skill of an accomplished plastic surgeon with empathy and compassion.
Most women want breast augmentation results that look and feel natural and these goals guide Dr. Burke when she creates surgical plans. Your consultation with Dr. Burke will help her to fully understand what it is you are hoping to accomplish with your procedure. She uses exact measurements and specific implant styles the two of you choose together to achieve a beautifully proportioned physique.
The options available to you regarding your augmentation, include:
Dr. Burke proudly offers women a wide selection of breast implants from Allergan® and Mentor®. These breast implants, all FDA approved, allow patients to achieve their own unique outcomes with a personalized combination of the following options: size, fill material, shape, profile, and texture.
This is one of the main decisions breast augmentation patients ask about. Dr. Burke takes a variety of factors into account when recommending breast implant size, including your anatomy, amount of existing breast tissue, desired breast size, and lifestyle.
Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Today, most patients over age 22 choose silicone implants because they make the breasts look and feel more natural than saline implants. Silicone implants are prefilled and are available in different firmnesses ranging from silicone gel to highly cohesive silicone (gummy bears). Saline implants are filled with harmless sterile saltwater after they are placed within the breast and are more affordable than silicone.
Round implants are the most popular option because they increase breast fullness at the top, sides, and bottom. Teardrop implants, also called anatomical or shaped, gently slope out from the top of the breast for increased fullness at the bottom of the breast.
An implant’s profile describes how much it projects (sticks out) from the chest wall. In general, profiles range from low to high (see photo of MemoryGel implants). The width of the implant (its base) narrows as the profile increases, so high profile implants are the narrowest. Moderate profiles, which are in the middle, are most commonly used for breast augmentation patients.
The surface of breast implants can be smooth or textured. Smooth implants are softer than textured and the most popular choice with patients. They move around freely within the breast, allowing the breast to shift naturally with body movements. A textured surface adheres to surrounding tissues holding the breast implant in place. All shaped implants are textured because they need to stay oriented with the thin, narrow end up and the fuller end in the lower breast.
Dr. Burke will work closely with you to help choose the right breast implant size, shape, texture, and fill material for you.
The following implants are popular with Dr. Burke’s patients:
Breast augmentation adds fullness to the breasts, while a breast lift raises and reshapes them. Mild sagging can be corrected with implants; moderate to significant sagging requires a lift to reduce the amount of excess stretched skin and restore a youthful breast shape and position. Dr. Burke often combines these procedures for women after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight loss.
Yes! Dr. Burke can safely perform breast augmentation along with other plastic surgery procedures to provide multiple improvements with a single surgery and recovery period. These combination procedures, called mommy makeovers, often include one or more of the following procedures:
Dr. Burke uses today’s most current techniques in breast augmentation to ensure beautiful and natural looking results. She offers traditional incision locations, hidden under the breast or the edge of the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). Additionally, Dr. Burke specializes in transaxillary breast augmentation, where the incision is concealed within a natural crease of the underarm region, avoiding any visible scars on the breast.
Your surgery with Dr. Burke will be performed under general anesthesia. Once your specified incision has been made, Dr. Burke will carefully place your chosen implants within a pocket created either above or beneath the pectoral muscle (this will also be determined during your consultation). Silicone implants are put in place pre-filled to your desired size.
For a quicker and more efficient procedure, Dr. Burke uses the Keller Funnel™. The Keller Funnel is an implant delivery device that allows for no-touch insertion of the implants into the breast.
Once Dr. Burke has achieved your desired results, your incisions are closed and any necessary dressings or surgical drains are put into place.

Most women return home shortly after their surgery under the care of a loved one.
Dr. Burke generally recommends returning to light activities within a day or two of your augmentation and full activities within 2 to 3 weeks. You will notice fuller, younger-looking breasts almost immediately, with results only getting better as bruising, swelling, and incision lines continue to diminish as you heal. We love hearing the stories of our patients who have undergone breast augmentation–of how they spent hours at the mall trying on everything for their new body, their first time wearing a bikini, or the simple joy they felt when first seeing the full outcome of their procedure in the mirror.
Results are usually long-term; however, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and natural aging may alter the shape of your breasts after augmentation.
“For years I dealt with being flat chested. I was never able to hold up a dress without having a super padded bra, and now with the help of Dr. Burke, I am able to hold up a dress. Just in time to start trying on wedding dresses.”

When performed by an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon, breast augmentation is quite safe. While complications are possible with any surgery, Dr. Burke uses only FDA-approved implants and takes special care to ensure each patient is a good candidate for the surgery.
It is perfectly safe to breastfeed after having breast augmentation. If this is your plan, Dr. Burke can take special steps when performing your surgery to avoid impact to your milk glands and associated nerves.
As long as you are happy with the way your breasts look and feel, there’s no set time frame in which they should be replaced. Dr. Burke performs revision breast augmentation to address concerns and complications. She can also perform an elective implant exchange for patients who want to change the size of their implants or upgrade to a newer type.
There’s a reason breast augmentation is consistently one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. and at our practice; the vast majority of patients are happy with their results and more confident about they way they look in and out of clothing.
