Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty

Dr. Burke can restore a rested, alert appearance to tired, puffy eyes with eyelid surgery. At our Barrington, IL, practice, both men and women come in for this popular procedure, which produces remarkable results when performed by a specialist. Sagging or hooded upper eyelids and baggy, wrinkled, or sunken lower eyelids can make you appear tired and older than you actually are–even if you have otherwise healthy, smooth skin.

Dr. Burke is one of the few board-certified plastic surgeons in the Barrington area who specialize in eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). She completed a combined aesthetic and oculoplastic fellowship and her expertise in upper and lower eyelid surgery sets her apart from other surgeons.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery patients include men and women of varying ages who are dissatisfied with their eyelids and may even have impaired vision from excess, hanging skin. Dr. Burke spends a great deal of time with patients during their consultations to ensure she creates a surgical plan that addresses their concerns.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both. Most patients who undergo eyelid surgery have at least one of these conditions:

  • Excess skin covering the upper eyelids’ natural folds
  • Loose upper eyelid skin that hangs over the eyelashes
  • Puffiness in the upper or lower eyelids (or both) which creates a tired or sad appearance
  • Excess lower eyelid skin and thin, “crepe paper” lower eyelid wrinkles
  • Bags and dark circles under the eyes

Dr. Burke uses specialized techniques she’s honed performing hundreds of eyelid surgery procedures during her career, providing results that create a refreshed appearance that looks natural.

“Dr. Burke…is very caring. She listens to you. She comes into the room and pays very close attention to what you have to say.”

Upper Blepharoplasty

Surgery on the upper eyelids is generally performed as an outpatient procedure using a local anesthetic with sedation. After making an incision that’s easily concealed in the eyelid’s natural crease, Dr. Burke removes excess skin and muscle and either removes or repositions fat pads. Additionally, she reshapes the upper eyelid to create a more youthful and rested appearance.
Droopy upper eyelids that rest too low on your eye (also known as eyelid ptosis) can impair your peripheral vision in addition to giving you a tired appearance. By repositioning the eyelid muscles and reducing excess skin, Dr. Burke creates a smooth, natural contour to the upper eyelid and opens up your field of vision.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Dr. Burke can combine various advanced techniques to create the optimal lower eyelid surgery results. She uses her surgical expertise and aesthetic sense to produce a smooth transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek, while correcting the tight hollowing of the inner lower eyelid–called a tear trough–and removing excess skin to create a result that looks natural and youthful.

The range of techniques used by Dr. Burke depends on a patient’s specific concerns. The options include:

  • Repositioning or removing excess fat that causes puffiness
  • Fat grafting to fill hollows and create smooth lower eyelids
  • Removing excess skin to address wrinkling or baggy lower eyelids

Additionally, Dr. Burke may tighten or reposition tendons to fix sagging or drooping eyelids, a procedure that is best performed by a surgeon such as Dr. Burke with specialized oculoplastic training.

Lower eyelid surgery may involve external or internal incisions. An incision on the outside of the eyelid is camouflaged just below the eyelashes in most cases. In transconjunctival lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Burke makes an incision on the inside of the lower lid, leaving no visible scarring.

Lower eyelid surgery is typically an outpatient procedure but is most commonly performed using general anesthesia.

Upper Blepharoplasty vs. Brow Lift

It’s fairly common for patients to ask whether they are better candidates for a brow lift or upper eyelid surgery. That’s because the cosmetic concerns–frown lines and a heaviness around the eyes–are similar for both procedures. Dr. Burke evaluates the position of the eyebrows to help determine which procedure is best suited for you. If the eyebrows remain in a relatively good position, eyelid surgery to remove excess skin is often recommended. When the brows have lowered, though, a brow lift may be a better approach. Some patients may benefit from a combined procedure.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Patients recover at their own pace, but there are some general guidelines that can help you anticipate what to expect. Swelling and bruising are common side effects following eyelid surgery. While the most [swelling will occur in the first few weeks, you will see continual improvement during the next 3 to 6 months. Proper skin care and sun protection, including sunglasses, are extremely important during the healing process.

Dr. Burke recommends light activity for patients the day after surgery. She suggests waiting 1 to 2 weeks before returning to your normal exercise routine.

Due to her advanced fellowship training and reputation for outstanding care, Dr. Burke sees eyelid surgery patients from Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, and surrounding areas.
