Many advancements have been made since the first breast augmentation was performed in 1895 by German surgeon, Vincenz Czerny. Some, like using glass balls as an implant, are questionable and short lived; whereas others, like the Keller Funnel, are a welcome and lasting addition.
The Keller Funnel was designed by a board certified plastic surgeon named Dr. Kevin Keller—who, in his own practice, identified a need for an easier method of implant insertion. Introduced in 2008, the Keller Funnel was Dr. Keller’s solution: a delivery device designed to better facilitate silicone implant placement.
An opinion poll sponsored by Keller Medical found that nearly 95 percent of surgeons agreed that the Keller Funnel makes it easier to place the implant into the breast pocket.
Reduces the Risk of Infection
Sliding through the lubricated funnel, the implant is able to be directly delivered into the breast pocket. This no-touch sterile approach decreases the risk of contamination by more than 50 percent and reduces the potential future complications like infection or capsular contraction.
Allows for a Smaller Incision
With the Keller Funnel, Dr. Burke is able to make smaller surgical incisions. Shaped somewhat like a pastry bag, the funnel’s design makes it possible to place a larger implant through a smaller incision—more like what you would expect with a saline implant.
The Keller Funnel is a welcome addition for women who are prone to scarring and for those who are concerned with the appearance of any residual scarring.
A Gentler Procedure for You
Far more traumatic, inserting silicone implants without the use of the funnel involves a fair amount of pushing, squishing, and squeezing. Requiring less force, the Keller Funnel reduces additional trauma to the incision area and surrounding tissues. Being less invasive, the Keller Funnel may lower post-operative bruising and swelling. Similarly, less stress is placed on the implant itself and may lower the chance of a future rupture.
For More than Just Breast Augmentation
The Keller Funnel is not limited to breast implants alone and can be used for pectoral, glute, and calf augmentation.
